Solving Teenage Delinquency in Korea, by Seung Up
Today, there are many delinquent teenagers and it is one of the social problems in Korea. Their crimes are increasing and becoming fiercer every year. Teenage crimes have increased 21% over the past 5 years, and it is 15% of all crimes, now. Today, teenagers commit terrible crimes such as killing parents, statutory rape, and murder. Can you imagine teenagers committing these crimes? We could not think these terrible crimes ten years ago. However, it is not only their fault because almost all delinquent teenagers have problems in their family or at school. We must solve this problem as soon as possible because teenage crimes increase every year. The three possible solutions to teenage delinquency in Korea is for parents to care for and counsel their children, for teachers not to discriminate between good students and bad students, and for employers not to allow teenagers to get illegal jobs, like working in a bar or club.
The first solution is that parents should care for and counsel their children. Teenagers need the love of their families, and the families should care for them. In fact, almost all delinquent teenagers have problems in their family. For example, if parents often hit their children, the children may become violent and hit other people easily. Also, if parents are rarely home, their children could smoke, drink, use narcotics, or get into other trouble with delinquent friends. Teenagers do not recognize which way is right or wrong, and they can fall into delinquency easily. The parents should control and counsel their children. When they have problems in school or with their friends, children want to talk with their parents. Who can help them if their parents do not? For teenagers, their parents are the most important people in their lives. If parents will counsel and care for their teenage children when they have problems, the number of delinquent teenagers will decrease.
Another solution to teenage delinquency in Korea is that teachers must not discriminate between good students and bad students. Some bad teachers in Korea like students who get high grades. Some awful teachers do not care for students who do not study very well, and they discriminate. Every person has different talents, not only in studying, but some terrible teachers force students only to study in school. For example, when I was a high school student, one teacher scolded me when my score was less than on the last examination. The teacher even hit me because of my grade. As another example, my friend was late, so he had to clean the classroom, but another student who studied very well was also late, but he was not punished. It was very unfair. The teacher should care more for bad students and set a good example for them, but they discriminate against bad students. Teenagers grow to hate their school and spend time with bad people and play hooky. Finally, they may become delinquent easily. Discrimination against students is one of the causes of teenage delinquency, so teachers in school must not discriminate between good students and bad students.
The final solution for teenage delinquency in Korea is that employers must not allow teenagers to get illegal jobs in places such as bars, and clubs. Many teenagers leave their house and live with their bad friends, and it causes teenagers to become delinquents. Some of them work illegal jobs because they pay more than legal jobs. They are not adults, so they cannot get a job with a good salary legally. However, they need much money because they need to pay for rent, food, and their guilty pleasures, such as drinking, smoking, or drugs. The employers should not allow them to get illegal jobs. Even if they work legally, employers should check with their parents to allow them to work. If they cannot get a job without their parents’ permission, they should go back to their family. Finally, the number of delinquent teenagers will decrease.
In conclusion, there are many delinquent teenagers in Korea, but it is not only their fault. There are three best possible solutions for overcoming the problem. First, parents should care and counsel with their children because teenagers need the love of their parents. Second, teachers in school should not discriminate between good students and bad students, because then the teenagers may hate school, and they will fall into the wrong crowd easily if they do not go to school. Third, employers must not allow teenagers to get illegal jobs because many delinquent teenagers need much money, but legal jobs do not give much money to teenagers. If our society keeps these three points in mind, teenage delinquency in Korea will decrease.
