Obesity, by Zaza
The word obesity is derived from the Greek word ob, which means excess, and eder, which means to eat. Therefore, obesity means to eat excessively. Obesity is a disease in which the fat of the body is accumulated excessively, and has erogenous causes (eating too much), endogenous causes (an alteration of the metabolism), and endocrine-related causes (hormonal function), etc. Obesity is the first link in a chain of diseases that includes diabetes, upheavals in metabolism, circulatory diseases, and cardiac problems. Many obese people live like disabled people, rejected by society, even by their relatives, which greatly reduces their self-esteem, and obesity prevents them from being happy. Obesity is not always accompanied by an increase in the weight of the body. The obesity is not only a disease with physical consequences, but it also has important medical, social, economic and physical consequences. For that reason, people must look for the solution for obesity. Our effort and motivation, at the moment, is the only effective way to overcome obesity. Although the advances in the study of obesity are constant, easy solutions do not exist. The three most common proposed solutions to problems of obesity are: children’s nutritional education, lifestyle modification, and bypass surgery.
First, you would have to educate children about balanced food and that obesity can cause short-term, medium-term, and long-term health problems. Child who has an obese parent has a risk of becoming obese. For this reason, as a parent, it is necessary to teach your children what they should eat. Positive reinforcement of children’s attitudes without food should be involved. Parents’ work is to give nutritious food that contributes to good health. Motivate your child to eat healthy food by providing them with food that is attractive and that your child can easily manipulate (for example small pieces for small fingers, or smooth food that does not take a long time to chew). Children often eat at school. Healthy food is fundamental during childhood and for the development of their bodies. If children eat well, they will study well. If you reinforce the food that has nutrients to your children, eating healthy become an obligation. Teachers can also encourage their students which food they have to eat. They insist that they recognize flavors or they even try to condition the children by having them identify some foods with basic activities like running or laughing. Thus, the children want to eat all types of food since they understand it is necessary for survival. Parents should not teach children that if they win, they are going to receive food such as ice cream or a treat. Often, food is used like a prize. Food is also used as punishment. For example, a mother might say "I will not give you anything to eat until you do what I said”. Children should request to eat according to their natural sense of hunger. If you use food reward or punishment, you will destroy their ability to determine when they are really hungry. To force children to eat when they are really not hungry, or to feed them when they are bored, destroys their sense of hunger. To animate them to play and independence, teach them to stay busy. Children who remain in front of the television set will often become bored and have a false sensation of hunger. Children often learn to associate boredom with wanting to eat. Soon, children must decide whether or not to eat and how much.
Second, children must modify their lifestyle to include good diet and exercise. In the treatment of obesity, diet and exercise are the basic form of all serious treatment. Diet does not mean to eat less than what you are accustomed to, but it means change what you eat and learning to eat nourishing, balanced foods with fewer calories. In general, a diet with these characteristics in an adult person does not have to exceed the 1,200 to 1,500 calories daily, with very little fat, few refined carbohydrates (sugars and candies), abundant vegetables, fresh fruits, and abundant amounts of water (not less than 2 liters daily). It is also important to consider age, sex, working hours, and physical activity. The intensity and the duration of the treatment will depend on each individual case. With a change in diet and exercise, a person can lose approximately between 500 and 700 grams weekly, or two to three kilos per month. You have to loose fat, not muscle. Also, regular physical activity is indispensable. Without the exercise, you will not reach your goal to be healthy. Diet and exercise are totally complementary and indispensable. In order to succeed, you should have patience, certainty, and tenacity. The results are so positive that you will not regret the effort. In addition, modern life has medicines that inhibit the absorption of fats and control the appetite. Pills are more common than diet or exercise because to take medicine is easier than changing your lifestyle, but these people have to know that medicines are not a solution for obesity, and the priority must be on prevention.
Third, if you or somebody close to you suffer from obesity, bypass surgery can be the solution. The surgery does not cure obesity, and it can be a dangerous method of reducing weight. However, it can diminish the risks and diseases caused by obesity. The present surgical techniques result in weight loss and maintenance, with remarkable improvement in the respiratory system, cardiovascular system, bones, joins, and many chemical operations. The surgery has been shown to be effective in the treatment of obesity since 1966. Throughout these years, doctors have improved the procedure, making it safer and less traumatic. Today, a surgery has fewer risks than most operations, and the risks of the operation are much smaller than risks of obesity without treatment. The objective of the surgery is to help the patient to modify his or her habits thanks to the creation of a small stomach, whereupon the individual has less sensation of hunger and feels satisfied after ingesting only a little food. The most commons surgeries are gastric derivation, gastroplatia vertical, and the gastric band.
In conclusion, the solution to overcoming obesity is educating children to eat healthy. In addition, you can replace bad habits with healthy food and exercise. Finally, the modern life presents a better and easier choice in surgery. The importance of being healthy is to not risk your life.
