Two countries: Peru and Mexico, by Zaza

Three years ago, when I was in ninth grade in high school, my teacher talked about the civilizations in South America. She talked a lot about Peru and Mexico because they are the most popular and biggest civilizations in America. I was impressed because Peru and Mexico have many similarities in their history and culture. For this reason, I anted to search for as much information as I could to learn about the differences between Peru and Mexico. This information can be useful for you. After I compared the facts and figures, customs, and food of the two counties, you can have the knowledge to talk about these two countries in depth.

The first point to consider when comparing Peru and Mexico is the basic facts and figures. First of all, both countries had a big empire where Aztecs, Incas, and Mayas lived. Next, people in both countries speak the same language; Quechua speakers were form Peru and Aymaras speakers were from Mexico and both were bilingual and spoke speak Spanish as a second language. Finally, 90 percent of the population of both countries is Catholic. But that is where the similarities end. Mexico is bigger than Peru because the total area of Mexico is 1,958,201 square kilometers and Peru is 1,258,216 square kilometers. In Peru, there are 79 total languages, and 55 of those languages are spoken in the jungle alone, Mexico has only 63 languages total. You can see the diversity of the people that live in Peru. It is smaller than Mexico, but it has more languages. Mexico has 97.5 million inhabitants and Peru has 23 million inhabitants, which means Mexico has 74.5 million more inhabitants than Peru. The large population of Mexico can be a disadvantage because of the high birth rate and the overpopulation; this produces misery, ethnic problems, people leaving the country, wars, murders, homicides, and fights between people. The currency in Peru is the sol (a dollar is 3.48 soles) and the peso in Mexico (a dollar is 10 pesos).

In addition in these facts and statistics, there are many customs in both countries. Since most people in Peru and Mexico are Catholics, people in both countries celebrate the virgins’ days. For example, most people from Peru believe in Senor de los Milagros and most people from Mexico believe in the Virgin Guadalupe. Peruvians celebrate Mother’s Day on the second Friday of May, and Mexicans celebrate it on May tenth. In the beginning of spring. Peru celebrates Perol (a party that is celebrated after a traditional dance), but Mexicans celebrate a day called Piñatas (which is celebrated with piñatas).

Finally, Peruvians and Mexicans food has a lot of seasonings. Also, both use meat most of the time. Besides these similarities, there are a lot of differences between the traditional food in Peru and in Mexico. Most people in Peru eat rice, but in Mexico they eat tortillas. The most common dishes in Peru are ceviche (fish cooked with lemon), papa la huancayna (potatoes with spicy cream), and chicken. The common foods in Mexico are chicken with mole (a spicy sauce containing chocolate) and nachos with chicken, guacamole, and beans. The basic ingredients of Mexican food are corn, spices like aji (which is like salsa) or chile, red meat, beans, tomatoes, onions, and nopal (a kind of cactus). The basic ingredient of Peruvian food is ajinomoto (which looks like salt but tastes different), locre (which is a vegetable), and potatoes.

In conclusion, you probably have a better understanding of the similarities and differences between Mexico and Peru. The most exceptional point is the facts and figures of both countries, and both have much information to talk about. Peruvians can prove that they have a great of deal of history and culture in older objects and places, and many tourists visit them. You can find interesting ruins of the Incas that you have probably never seen, such as Machu Picchu. However, Mexico also has its advantages. Mexico has a better economy than Peru, and their money can be used to maintain the country in good condition. With this information, you can have a better understanding of the rich diversity of two most prominent cultures in South America.
